Dress codes for balls, galas, and formal invitations
Dress codes provide guidance for life's major social occasions – from weddings and opera balls to elegant summer events. Some follow long-standing traditions, while others are now interpreted with a deliberately modern touch. As the House of Celebration, WILVORST accompanies men during these very special moments – with the right look for every dress code and the freedom to wear elegance in a contemporary way.
Discover what you should wear for each dress code, true to the motto: "What should a man wear and when?"
BLACK TIE – the iconic evening look
Black Tie is one of the best-known formal dress codes. It centers on the dinner jacket – internationally also known as a tuxedo. The dress code owes its name to the black bow tie that is traditionally worn with the dinner jacket.
The classic look: a black dinner jacket with a shawl collar or peak lapels, a white dress shirt, a black bow tie, and elegant black shoes. But Black Tie has more facets today. Double-breasted styles, deep navy, modern materials, and individual styling give the classic look a new fashion attitude.
Perfect for: Gala · Ball · elegant wedding · dinner · evening celebration
WHITE TIE – the grandest dress code
White tie is the highest level of classic festive men's attire. The look: the tailcoat.
A classic white tie outfit consists of a black tailcoat with matching trousers, a white wing-collar shirt with a piqué bib, a low-cut white piqué waistcoat, and the characteristic white bow tie. Black patent leather shoes complete the look. White tie is worn for exceptionally formal celebrations – such as grand balls, state banquets, select weddings, or the Vienna Opera Ball.
For equally formal daytime events, however, another classic takes over: the morning coat.
Perfect for: Opera ball · State banquet · Grand ball · Highly formal wedding · Gala
DINNER JACKET – Black Tie meets La Dolce Vita
The light dinner jacket – internationally known as a dinner jacket – combines classic formal wear with summery elegance. Typical are light shades such as white, ivory, or cream, combined with black tuxedo trousers.
Paired with a tuxedo shirt and black bow tie, it creates a classic look. Worn with an open-collar shirt and minimal accessories, however, the dinner jacket takes on a modern, relaxed attitude.
Perfect for: Summer Wedding · Destination Wedding · Garden Celebration · Welcome Dinner · elegant outdoor event
